Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. As a young girl the carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. She left the school in the span of two years in order to explore a career in acting. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles and In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. Following a short time as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. There she was able to earn a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
